Plasma modifiering av material har blivit en viktig process i många industriella områden. Rengöring av ytor och funktionalisering av ytor utan att ändra bulk egenskap hos materialet har gjort plasmabehandlingen en viktig process i ytan vetenskap 1-8. Plasmabehandling av polymerer resulterar i homolytisk bindningsklyvning. Detta leder till en kantning av polymermaterialet och till bildandet av radikala rika ytor. Genom användning av plasma som innehåller syremolekyler, blir ytan syrerik och därmed mer hydrofil 9-11. Emellertid är hydrofiliciteten hos ytorna inte är stabil över tiden 12. För att öka den långsiktiga stabiliteten kan plasmabehandlad yta kemiskt modifieras efter eller under plasmaprocessen 13-15. Denna behandling utförs normalt genom att lägga till en reaktiv monomer arter i gasfas under plasmaprocess, dessa monomerer sedan polymeriserafrån de skapade radikaler av polymerytan. För att modifiera ytspänningen hos kommersiella tillgängliga spårkantade polymermembran, är ett förfarande för yt-initierad polymerisation presenteras. Polymerisationen från membranytan induceras genom plasmabehandling av membranet, följt av reaktion av membranytan med en metanollösning av 2-hydroxietylmetakrylat (HEMA). Särskild hänsyn tas till de processparametrar för plasmabehandling före polymerisationen på ytan. Till exempel studeras inverkan av plasmabehandling på olika typer av membran (t.ex. polyester, polykarbonat, polyvinylidenfluorid). Vidare är den tidsberoende stabiliteten hos de yt-ympade membran visas av kontaktvinkelmätningar. Vid ympning av poly (2-hydroxietylmetakrylat) (PHEMA) på detta sätt kan ytan ytterligare modifieras genom förestring av alkoholdelen av polymeren med en karboxylsyra funktion av den önskade substansen.Dessa reaktioner kan därför användas för funktionalisering av membranytan. Till exempel kan ytspänningen hos membranet ändras eller en önskad funktion som den presenterade ljus responsiveness kan införas. Detta demonstreras genom omsättning PHEMA med en karboxylsyra funktionaliserad spirobenzopyran enhet som leder till en ljus-känslig membran. Valet av lösningsmedlet spelar en viktig roll i den postmodification steget och diskuteras mer i detalj i detta dokument.
