Transcraniële gelijkstroom stimulatie (tDCS) is een niet-invasieve methode hersenstimulatie waarin corticale werking wordt gemoduleerd door middel van een zwakke elektrische stroom (gewoonlijk 1-2 mA) geprojecteerd tussen twee scalp elektroden aangebracht. Fysiologisch tDCS induceert een polariteit afhankelijke verandering in neuronale rust membraanpotentiaal (RMP) binnen de beoogde corticale gebied door de manipulatie van natrium-en calciumkanalen, waardoor veranderingen in corticale prikkelbaarheid 1 bevorderen. Concreet heeft anodische stimulering (atDCS) is aangetoond dat corticale activiteit te verhogen via depolarisatie van neuronale RMP terwijl kathodische stimulatie (ctDCS) vermindert corticale prikkelbaarheid 2. Vergeleken met andere vormen van hersenstimulatie (bijv. transcraniële magnetische stimulatie) veiligheid is goed ingeburgerd en tot nu toe geen ernstige bijwerkingen zijn gemeld, ook in kwetsbare bevolkingsgroepen 3, 4. Ook, althans voor Lower stimulatie intensiteiten (tot 1 mA), een effectieve placebo (&quot;schijnvertoning&quot;) stimulatie voorwaarde bestaat 5, waardoor effectieve blindering van deelnemers en onderzoekers om de stimulatie voorwaarden, waardoor tDCS een aantrekkelijk instrument in experimenteel en klinisch onderzoek instellingen. Talrijke studies tot nu toe is gebleken dat deze veranderingen in corticale prikkelbaarheid kan tot gedragsmodulaties. In het motorische systeem, hebben consequent polariteit afhankelijke effecten gemeld 1, 6 voor zowel atDCS en ctDCS. Cognitieve studies, de meeste studies die atDCS gebruikt om cognitieve functies te verbeteren gerapporteerd gunstige effecten op de prestaties 7, terwijl ctDCS vaak niet leiden tot verminderde cognitieve verwerking. Dit laatste kan worden verklaard door de grotere redundantie van neurale verwerking middelen onderliggende cognitie 6. De meerderheid van tDCS studies cross-over designs gebruikt om te studerende directe effecten van de stimulatie, die de beëindiging van de huidige slechts gedurende korte perioden 1 overleven. Dit probleem kan worden aangepakt door een combinatie van tDCS met functionele brain imaging technieken zoals elektro-encefalogram (EEG) of functionele magnetische resonantie imaging (fMRI). De meerderheid van de onderzoeken naar de neurale mechanismen die ten grondslag liggen cognitie en motorische functies hebben ervoor gekozen om in dienst fMRI 11. Het manuscript zal zich richten op de verschillen tussen gedrags tDCS experimenten en het gecombineerde gebruik van tDCS tijdens gelijktijdige fMRI, met een specifieke nadruk op de hardware-eisen, de uitvoering van de techniek, en veiligheidsoverwegingen. Als voorbeeld, een enkele sessie van tDCS tijdens task afwezig rusttoestand (RS) fMRI en tijdens een taaltaak 14, 15 w toegediend aan de linker inferieure frontale gyrus (IFG)ziek worden beschreven, hoewel vele andere toepassingen mogelijk zijn 16, 19. transcranial direct current stimulation and simultaneous  functional magnetic resonance imaging

Transcraniële gelijkstroom stimulatie (tDCS) is een niet-invasieve hersenstimulatie techniek zijn zwakke elektrische stroom toegediend aan de hoofdhuid corticale prikkelbaarheid manipuleren en bijgevolg gedrag en hersenfunctie gebruikt. In de afgelopen tien jaar hebben tal van studies op korte termijn en lange termijn effecten van tDCS op verschillende maatregelen van gedrags-prestaties tijdens motorische en cognitieve taken aan bod, zowel in gezonde individuen en in een aantal verschillende patiëntenpopulaties. Tot nu toe echter weinig bekend over de neurale onderbouwing van tDCS-actie bij de mens met betrekking tot grootschalige hersenen netwerken. Dit probleem kan worden aangepakt door een combinatie van tDCS met functionele brain imaging technieken, zoals functionele magnetische resonantie imaging (fMRI) of elektro-encefalogram (EEG). Vooral fMRI is de meest gebruikte brain imaging techniek om de neurale mechanismen cognitie en motoriek onderzoeken. Applicatiop van tDCS tijdens fMRI maakt analyse van de neurale mechanismen die ten grondslag liggen aan gedrag tDCS effecten met een hoge ruimtelijke resolutie over het hele brein. Recente studies met behulp van deze techniek worden aangewezen stimulatie geïnduceerde veranderingen in taak-gerelateerde functionele hersenactiviteit op het stimuleren site en ook in de meer afgelegen gebieden van de hersenen, die werden geassocieerd met gedrags-verbetering. Daarnaast tDCS toegediend tijdens rust-state fMRI toegestaan ​​identificatie van grootschalige veranderingen in de hele hersenen functionele connectiviteit. Toekomstige studies met behulp van deze gecombineerde protocol moet nieuwe inzichten in de mechanismen van tDCS actie bij gezondheid en ziekte en nieuwe opties voor meer gerichte toepassing van tDCS in onderzoek en klinische settings opleveren. De huidige manuscript beschrijft deze nieuwe techniek in een stap-voor-stap-mode, met een focus op technische aspecten van tDCS toegediend tijdens fMRI.

Functionele MRI is de meest gebruikte functionele beeldvormende techniek om de onderliggende neurale mechanismen van motorische of cognitieve functies pakken. Meer recent is fMRI ook gebruikt om tDCS effecten op corticale en-connectiviteit evalueren.
