Plant-plaaginteractie is een onderwerp van groot wetenschappelijk en economisch belang. Het werd historisch bestudeerd met behulp van zowel gewassen (zoals tomaat) en het model plant, A. thaliana. In beide gevallen kan de gevoeligheid van de installaties aan herbivoor ofwel rechtstreeks worden gemeten door middel van beoordeling van plantenfenotype na herbivoor aanval of indirect via de beoordeling van de plaag prestaties. Directe metingen van plantaardige gevoeligheid werden eerder gebruikt voor een aantal schadelijke insect species met behulp van diverse methoden.
