Plant-pest interaksjon er et tema av stor vitenskapelig og økonomisk betydning. Det var historisk studert ved hjelp av både planter (for eksempel tomat) og modell anlegg, A. thaliana. I begge tilfeller kunne mottakelighet for anlegget til planteeter måles enten direkte gjennom vurdering av plante fenotype etter herbivore angrep eller indirekte ved vurderingen av pest ytelse. Direkte målinger av plante mottakelighet ble benyttet tidligere for et antall insekt skadedyr ved hjelp av en rekke metoder. De to-spotted spider mite, Tetranychus urticae, er en allestedsnærværende polyphagous leddyr herbivore som strømmer på en bemerkelsesverdig bredt spekter av arter, med mer enn 150 av økonomisk verdi.
