Interaktion Växt skadedjur är ett ämne av stor vetenskaplig och ekonomisk betydelse. Det var historiskt studeras med hjälp av både grödor (t.ex. tomat) och modellväxten, A. thaliana. I båda fallen kunde känsligheten hos växten till gräsätande mätas antingen direkt genom bedömning av växtfenotyp efter herbivore angrepp eller indirekt genom bedömning av skadedjur prestanda. Direkta mätningar av växt känslighet utnyttjades tidigare för ett antal insektsarter med hjälp av en rad olika metoder. Till exempel är herbivory av lepidoptera-larver mättes som en uppskattning av den del av växtvävnad som förbrukas av antingen Plutella xylostella (kålmal) eller Trichoplusia ni (cabbage looper) med blotta ögat med hjälp av ett galler 12. Också, finns det metoder som utnyttjar digital avbildning av bladskador med efterföljande kvantitativ bildanalys. Men dessa metoder är inte lämpliga för studier där ett större antal kvalster måste tillämpas.
