Barrett-slokdarm (BE) is een metaplastische wijziging van het normale squameuze epitheel van de slokdarm als een gevolg van chronische blootstelling aan de maaginhoud gevolg van gastro-oesofageale refluxziekte (GERD) 1. BE wordt verondersteld om een beschermingsmechanisme in reactie op GERD, echter de aanwezigheid van BE brengt een verhoogd risico van esophageal adenocarcinoom (EAC), een ziekte die een significant slechte overleving 1 draagt. Huidige schattingen suggereren dat tot 5,6% van de Amerikaanse bevolking hebben, echter als BE vaak asymptomatisch, men denkt dat de meerderheid van BE blijft gediagnosticeerd 2. Zoals incidentiecijfers van zowel GERD en EAC aanhoudende groei 3 hebben gezien, is het belangrijk geworden om de moleculaire mechanismen die betrokken zijn bij de progressie van BE om EAC te begrijpen, vooral omdat deze informatie zou kunnen verschaffen therapeutische benaderingen aan de preventie van progressie van BE aan EAC. 1. Adenocarcinoom van de slokdarm (EAC) heeft een totale overleving van minder dan 17% en de incidentie van EAC is dramatisch gestegen in de afgelopen twee decennia. Een van de belangrijkste risicofactoren EAC Barrett-slokdarm (BE), een metaplastische wijziging van de normale squameuze slokdarm in reactie op chronische maagzuur.
