Aangezien patiënten sterven aan kanker en metastase, en efficiënt anti-invasieve behandelingen zijn nog schaars, laboratoriumtesten die bootsen de invasie van tumorcellen ontwikkeld. Het doel van de kippehart assay is een relevant orgaan kweekmethode op tumorinvasie bestuderen bij drie dimensies bieden. De test kan onderscheid maken tussen invasieve en niet-invasieve cellen, en maakt onderzoek naar de effecten van testverbindingen op tumorinvasie. Kankercellen - hetzij als aggregaten of enkele cellen - geconfronteerd worden met fragmenten van embryonale kuiken hart. Na orgaankweek in suspensie gedurende een paar dagen of weken de tegenover cultures gefixeerd en ingebed in paraffine voor histologische analyse. Het driedimensionale interactie tussen kankercellen en normale weefsel wordt vervolgens gereconstrueerd uit opeenvolgende coupes gekleurd met hematoxyline-eosine of na immunohistochemische kleuring voor epitopen in het hartweefsel of de naar elkaar kankercellen. De assay is consistent met de recent concept dat kankerinvasie het gevolg van moleculaire interacties tussen kankercellen en hun naburige stromale ontvangende elementen (myofibroblasten, endothEliel cellen, extracellulaire matrix componenten, etc.). Hier wordt dit stromale omgeving aangeboden aan de kankercellen als levend weefsel fragment. Ondersteuning aspecten de relevantie van de assay zijn meerdere. Invasie in de test volgens de criteria van kankerinvasie: progressief bezetting en vervanging in tijd en ruimte van het gastheerweefsel en invasiviteit en niet-invasief in vivo van de tegenover cellen doorgaans correleert met de uitkomst van de assay. Bovendien is de invasie patroon van cellen in vivo, zoals bepaald door pathologen, blijkt uit de histologische beelden in de assay. Kwantitatieve structuur-activiteitsrelatie (QSAR) analyse van de met vele mogelijke anti-invasieve organische verbindingen congeneer resultaten kon de studie van structuur-activiteit relaties voor flavonoïden en chalconen en bekende anti-metastatische geneesmiddelen in de kliniek gebruikt (bijvoorbeeld, microtubule remmers ) remt invasie in de test ook. However, de assay geen rekening immunologisch bijdragen kankerinvasie.

De histologische secties zoals aangegeven in figuur 5 tonen het resultaat van een aantal succesvolle assays. Het geluid histologie van de kweken aangeeft levensvatbare cellen en maakt het mogelijk om de interactie tussen tumorcellen en normale weefsels interpreteren.
