Overvågning hjernens aktivitet uden for laboratoriet uden fysiske begrænsninger præsenterer metodiske udfordringer. En fiberless blev wearable funktionelle nærheden infrarød spektroskopi-system (fNIRS) anvendes til at måle hjernens aktivitet under en økologisk fremadrettet hukommelse opgave. Det blev påvist, at dette system kan anvendes til at overvåge hjernens aktivitet under ikke-lab baserede eksperimenter.
