Technische Fortschritte haben oft im Verständnis der neurobiologischen Prozessen gefällte Quantensprünge. Zum Beispiel Hans Berger Entdeckung im Jahre 1929, daß elektrische Potentiale aus der menschlichen Kopfhaut aufgezeichneten die Form von Sinuswellen, deren Frequenz direkt auf das Niveau der Wachsamkeit des fachbezogenen, führte zu raschen Fortschritten im Verständnis der Schlaf-Wach- Regulierung, in Tieren und Menschen gleichermaßen. 1 Bis heute ist das electroencephlogram (EEG), in Verbindung mit dem Elektromyogramm (EMG), dh., elektrische Aktivität von der Skelettmuskulatur produziert, stellt die Daten &quot;Rückgrat&quot; fast jeder experimentellen und klinischen Einschätzung, die das Verhalten und die Physiologie mit der Aktivität der kortikalen Neuronen in benimmt Tieren, einschließlich Menschen korrelieren sucht. Im Gegensatz dazu werden Motoneuronen während der NREM-Schlaf stimuliert aber es gibt keine Augenbewegung. 4 Hz im EEG - Human NREM-Schlaf kann in 4 Stufen, wobei Stufe 4 wird als Tiefschlaf oder Tiefschlaf und wird von großen, langsamen Gehirnwellen mit Delta-Aktivität zwischen 0,5 identifiziert aufgeteilt werden. Auf der anderen Seite, eine Unterteilung zwischen den Phasen des NREM-Schlaf in kleinere Tiere, wie Ratten einnd Mäusen, wurde nicht untersucht, vor allem, weil sie nicht über lange Konzernschlafperioden, wie in den Menschen gesehen. Das neuronale und zelluläre Grundlage des Schlafbedürfnis oder alternativ &quot;Schlaf-Antrieb,&quot; bleibt ungelöst, aber wurde als homöostatischen Druck, der während der Wachperiode baut und wird durch Schlaf abgeführt konzipiert worden. Eine Theorie ist, dass endogene somnogenic Faktoren im Wachzustand und ihre allmähliche Ansammlung ist der Unterbau des Schlafes homöostatischen Druck aufzubauen. Während die erste formelle Hypothese, dass durch humorale Faktoren Schlaf reguliert hat Rosenbaum Arbeit veröffentlicht im Jahre 1892 4 gutgeschrieben ist, war es Ishimori 5, 6 und Pieron 7, die unabhängig voneinander und vor über 100 Jahren, zeigte die Existenz von schlaffördernde Chemikalien. polygraphic recording procedure for measuring sleep in mice

Recording of the epidural electroencephalogram (EEG) and electromyogram (EMG) in small animals, like mice and rats, has been pivotal to study the homeodynamics and circuitry of sleep-wake regulation. In many laboratories, a cable-based sleep recording system is used to monitor the EEG and EMG in freely behaving mice in combination with computer software for automatic scoring of the vigilance states on the basis of power spectrum analysis of EEG data. A description of this system is detailed herein. Steel screws are implanted over the frontal cortical area and the parietal area of 1 hemisphere for monitoring EEG signals. In addition, EMG activity is monitored by the bilateral placement of wires in both neck muscles. Non-rapid eye movement (Non-REM; NREM) sleep is characterized by large, slow brain waves with delta activity below 4 Hz in the EEG, whereas a shift from low-frequency delta activity to a rapid low-voltage EEG in the theta range between 6 and 10 Hz can be observed at the transition from NREM to REM sleep. By contrast, wakefulness is identified by low- to moderate-voltage brain waves in the EEG trace and significant EMG activity.
