Wir haben einfache Verfahren beschrieben elektrochemisch scharfe Feldemissionspunkte (FEPs) in einer NaOH-Lösung zu ätzen, und die FEPs zu testen, indem sie in Feldemissionsmodus betrieben wird. Das Ätzverfahren beschrieben ist eine Variation der bestehenden Techniken-Lamellen Drop-Off - Technik 7,8 und der Schwimmschicht - Technik 9,10. Scharfe Spitzen oder Punkte sind seit langem in Mikroskopieanwendungen, wie beispielsweise die Feldionenmikroskops (FIM) 1 und dem Rastertunnelmikroskop (STM) 2 und eine Reihe von Techniken zur Herstellung von scharfen Spitzen der verschiedenen Materialien wurden entwickelt 3 verwendet. Diese scharfen Spitzen können auch als Feldemissionspunkte (FEPs) betrieben werden, indem eine hohe Spannung für sie geltenden und dienen als bequeme Elektronenstrahlquelle. Eine Anwendung wie Quelle Ionenproduktion über Elektronenstoß-Ionisation (EII). Der FEP ist besonders vorteilhaft in Anwendungen, bei denen Temperaturschwankungen durch die thermische Emitter unerwünscht erzeugt. Zum Beispiel Ionenproduktion über EII von Hintergrundgas oder Dampf in hoher Präzision Penningfallen 4,5. Eine einfache Methode zur Herstellung FEPs ist elektrochemisch Wolframstäben in einer Natriumhydroxid (NaOH) Lösung ätzen. Diese Technik ist relativ einfach zu implementieren, mitbescheidenen Ausrüstung und wurde ziemlich reproduzierbar und zuverlässig erwiesen. Eine Anzahl von Verfahren sind in der Literatur beschrieben und Verbesserungen dieser Techniken weiterhin 6 zu erscheinen. Hier beschreiben wir ein Verfahren zum elektrochemischen Ätzen von Wolfram Spitzen in einer NaOH-Lösung. Unser Verfahren ist eine Variation der Lamellen Drop-Off - Technik 7,8 und die schwimmende Schicht Technik 9,10. Wie diese beiden Methoden ermöglicht es die Produktion von zwei Spitzen aus einem einzigen Ätzvorgang. Elektrochemische Ätzen von Wolfram in der wässrigen NaOH Base erfolgt über einen zweistufigen Prozess. Zunächst werden Zwischenwolframoxiden gebildet wird, und zweitens diese Oxide sind nicht-elektrochemisch das lösliche Wolframat-Anion zu bilden, gelöst. Dieses Verfahren wird beschrieben, in vereinfachter Form durch die beiden Reaktionen (1) W + 6Oh - → WO 3 (S) + 3H 2 O + 6e - und (2) WO 3 (S) + 2OH - → WO 4 2- + H 2 O. Die Ätzstroms und die NaOH-Lösung Molarität verwendet beeinflussen die Zeit und die erforderliche Spannung durch den Wolframstab zu ätzen. Die Untersuchung dieser Effekte werden vorgestellt und diskutiert. Noch wichtiger ist, haben die Ätzparameter einen Einfluss auf die Geometrie der Spitzen und als solche Feldemissionsmodus auf den Betrieb in. Die Geometrie der<html> Spitzen wir produziert wurden durch Abbilden sie mit einem Rasterelektronenmikroskop (SEM) charakterisiert. Diese Bilder können verwendet werden, um abschätzen zu können, um beispielsweise die Spitzenradius. Darüber hinaus wurden die Spitzen in Feldemissionsmodus durch Anlegen einer negativen Spannung von typischerweise einigen hundert Volt bis zu einigen Kilovolt, um sie und die Überwachung des sich ergebenden Elektronenemissionsstrom betrieben. Die Beziehung zwischen der Feldemissionsstrom, I, und die angelegte Vorspannung, V, kann 11 durch die Fowler-Nordheim - Gleichung beschrieben werden (3) I = AV 2 e -Cr eff / V, wobei R eff der effektive Radius der Spitze ist, A eine Konstante ist und C die zweite Fowler-Nordheim - Konstante <img alt="Gleichung 9" src="/files/ftp_upload/54030/54030eq9.jpg" /> In denen b = 6,83 eV - 3/2 V / nm,030eq11.jpg &quot;/&gt; ist die Austrittsarbeit von Wolfram ( <img alt="Gleichung 11" src="/files/ftp_upload/54030/54030eq11.jpg" /> ≈ 4,5 eV), k ist ein Faktor, der von der Geometrie abhängt (k ≈ 5) und <img alt="Gleichung 12" src="/files/ftp_upload/54030/54030eq15.jpg" /> ist der Korrekturterm Nordheim Bild ( <img alt="Gleichung 12" src="/files/ftp_upload/54030/54030eq15.jpg" /> ≈ 1) 12. electrochemical etching and characterization of sharp field emission points for electron impact ionization

A new variation of the drop-off method for fabricating field emission points by electrochemically etching tungsten rods in a NaOH solution is described. The results of studies in which the etching current and the molarity of the NaOH solution used in the etching process were varied are presented. The investigation of the geometry of the tips, by imaging them with a scanning electron microscope, and by operating them in field emission mode is also described. The field emission tips produced are intended to be used as an electron beam source for ion production via electron impact ionization of background gas or vapor in Penning trap mass spectrometry applications.
