Erhålla tillförlitliga uppgifter spårmetall i naturliga vatten kräver stor omsorg som betonas under provtagning, behandling, förbehandlingar och analys som syftar till att minska föroreningar. De verkliga koncentrationer (i under nM till nM i ytvatten 3) av upplösta spårmetaller är nu upp till två storleksordningar lägre än tidigare publicerade värden. Samma situation har visat sig i marin kemi där de accepterade upplösta spårmetallkoncentrationer i oceaniska vatten har minskat med storleksordningar under de senaste 40 åren eller så förbättrad provtagning och analysmetoder har införts. Ansträngningar har gjorts för att förbättra datakvaliteten med utvecklingen av &quot;ren teknik&quot; som syftar till att minska eller eliminera föroreningar spårmetall i alla faser av spårmetallanalys 4-8. För bestämning av spårmetallkoncentrationer vid omgivandenivåer, förkoncentrering ofta krävs. Jonbytargrupper tekniker 8-12 har allmänt tillämpats för effektiv förkoncentrering. Föroreningar kan uppstå från väggarna i behållarna, rengöring av behållarna, provtagaren, provhantering och lagring, och prov bevarande och analys 7,13. Alla studier med rena metoder genomförts på senare tid tyder på att spårmetallkoncentrationer i naturliga vatten är oftast långt under gränserna för rutinmetoder 7 detektions. Eftersom erkännandet av misstänkta spårmetall data i början av 1990-talet, har rena metoder införlivats i US EPA (Environmental Protection Agency) riktlinjer för spårmetallbestämning 14 och US Geological Survey har antagit rena metoder för deras övervakning av vattenkvaliteten projekt 15. Rena metoder för spårstudier metall måste användas i alla projekt för att skapa en fast och korrekt databas. <pclass = &quot;jove_content&quot;&gt; I princip bör vattenprover som används för spårmetallbestämning samlas med lämpliga provtagnings redskap med ett speciellt material och sammansättning, lagras och behandlas på rätt sätt med lämpliga behållare och apparater, innan du fortsätter med instrumentala analys. Eftersom svävande partiklar (SPM) kan genomgå förändringar under provlagringsperioden och ändra vattensammansättningen, snabb separation av SPM från vattenprov är en vanlig metod för spårstudier metall i vattenmiljöer. För bestämning av lösta spårmetallkoncentrationer i naturliga vatten, är filtrering nödvändig och in-line filtreringstekniker är lämpliga och effektiva. Distribution och beteende av spårmetaller i vattenmiljöer såsom yt- och grundvatten kan påverkas av naturliga (t.ex. vittring) och antropogena (t.ex. avloppsvatten avlopp) faktorer, liksom andra miljöförhållanden, såsom reregional geologi, morfologi, markanvändning och vegetation och klimat 16-19. Detta kan sedan leda till skillnader i fysikalisk-kemiska parametrar, såsom koncentrationer av suspenderade partiklar (SPM), löst organiskt kol (DOC), mänskligt orsakade ligander (t ex etylendiamintetraättiksyra, EDTA), salt, redoxpotential och pH 17-20. Därför korrekt och relevant spårmetall studier kräver lämplig provtagning för spårmetallanalys samt för att fastställa relaterade faktorer och parametrar.

Most of the trace metal concentrations in ambient waters obtained a few decades ago have been considered unreliable owing to the lack of contamination control. Developments of some techniques aiming to reduce trace metal contamination in the last couple of decades have resulted in concentrations reported now being orders of magnitude lower than those in the past. These low concentrations often necessitate preconcentration of water samples prior to instrumental analysis of samples. Since contamination can appear in all phases of trace metal analyses, including sample collection (and during preparation of sampling containers), storage and handling, pretreatments, and instrumental analysis, specific care needs to be taken in order to reduce contamination levels at all steps. The effort to develop and utilize "clean techniques" in trace metal studies allows scientists to investigate trace metal distributions and chemical and biological behavior in greater details. This advancement also provides the required accuracy and precision of trace metal data allowing for environmental conditions to be related to trace metal concentrations in aquatic environments.
This protocol that is presented here details needed materials for sample preparation, sample collection, sample pretreatment including preconcentration, and instrumental analysis. By reducing contamination throughout all phases mentioned above for trace metal analysis, much lower detection limits and thus accuracy can be achieved. The effectiveness of "clean techniques" is further demonstrated using low field blanks and good recoveries for standard reference material. The data quality that can be obtained thus enables the assessment of trace metal distributions and their relationships to environmental parameters.
