Forskare i kognitiv psykologi och neurovetenskap har länge studerat effekterna av blodsockersvängningar på hjärnan, kognition och beteende en. Till exempel har forskare funnit att variationer i blodsockerförutsäga skillnader i minnet (verbala, siffra span, som arbetar, och episodisk) 1-5, uppmärksamhet 6,7, problemlösning 8 och prestanda på uppgifter av varierande nivåer av kognitiv efterfrågan 2 , 9,10. Denna forskning finner att öka blodglukos ökar uppmärksamhet och minne, och att dessa effekter är starkast när man arbetar på kognitivt krävande uppgifter, och i de äldre 1,3. Den beskrivna blodsocker manipulation uppgift innebär en 8 timmars fasteperiod följt av riktade konsumtion av en kalori eller kalorifritt dryck 22. Efter fasta under åtta timmar, deltagarna slumpmässigt att konsumera eithenne en socker sötad dryck eller vatten. Denna metod gör det också möjligt för testning av några unika effekter som icke-kalori sötningsmedel (t ex. Aspartam, sukralos), som smakar sött som traditionella kalori sötningsmedel, men inte innehåller socker som behövs för att höja blodsockernivåerna 20,22,25 . Om intresserad av effekterna av icke-calorically sötade drycker innehåller denna uppgift en valfri, 3: e mellan-ämnen tillstånd där deltagarna konsumera en &quot;noll-kalori&quot; drink. Den nuvarande metoden har använts med framgång i flera sociala psykologiska paradigm 12,18,22, och erbjuder en kortare väg till testet för effekterna av förändringar i blodglukos vid självreglering än tidigare använda åtgärder som glukostolerans testar 26. Författarna ger också ett förfarande för bedömning av den kognitiva tillgängligheten av mål ord eller begrepp, med hjälp av en lexikal beslut uppgift 27,28. Reaktionshastigheten där deltagarna korrekt identifiera brev strängar i varje begrepps kategori mäter den relativa lätthet med vilken deltagaren får mentalt bearbeta ord i detta begrepp kategori. Snabbare reaktioner innebär att ett koncept är mer mentalt tillgänglig, och därmed &quot;på någons sinne&quot; 24,29,30. Som en följd av lexikala beslutsuppgifter göra användbara beroende variabler, och kan även användas som effektiva manipulerings kontroller för att mäta om en nyligen grundad koncept (se för mer information om priming referens 30) är verkligen därefter mer Cognitivt åtkomliga än den skulle vara i frånvaro av ett primtecken. Även den lexikala beslut uppgift är en uppgift som har använts i socialpsykologi i årtionden 29, presenterar den aktuella manuskriptet några smärre variationer av förfarandet, en länk till en redigerbar program mall 27, och ett empiriskt validerad lista med ord från författarnas tidigare arbete som mäter den kognitiva tillgängligheten av friska respektive icke hälsosamma livsmedel 20. Det är författarnas hoppas att ytterligare anpassning av dessa två förfaranden kan leda till innovationer inom socialpsykologiska forskning, ätbeteende och energireglering forskning, och kommer att underlätta ytterligare jämförande forskning som kombinerar perspektiv och metoder för flera discipliner .

a method for manipulating blood glucose and measuring resulting changes in cognitive accessibility of target stimuli

Much research in social psychology has investigated the impact of bodily energy need on cognition and decision-making. As such, blood glucose, the body's primary energy source, has been of special interest to researchers for years. Fluctuations in blood glucose have been linked to a variety of changes in cognitive and behavioral processes, such as self-control, political attitudes, and eating behavior. To help meet growing interest in the links between bodily energy need and these processes, this manuscript offers a simple methodology to experimentally manipulate blood glucose using a fasting procedure followed by administration of a sugar-sweetened, unsweetened, or artificially-sweetened beverage. This is followed by presentation of a method for measuring resulting changes in implicit cognition using a lexical decision-task. In this task, participants are asked to identify whether strings of letters are words or non-words and response latencies are recorded. Sample results from a recent publication are presented as an example of the applications for the experimental manipulation of blood glucose and the lexical decision task measures.
