El control de la expresión o actividad de genes específicos a través de la entrega de miocardio de los materiales genéticos en modelos murinos permite la investigación de las funciones de genes. Su potencial terapéutico en el corazón también se puede determinar. Hay enfoques limitados para la intervención molecular in vivo en el corazón del ratón. Virus adeno-asociado (rAAV) basada en la ingeniería del genoma recombinante se ha utilizado como una herramienta esencial para la manipulación genética cardiaca in vivo.
