Bijvoorbeeld, Sandhill kranen (Grus canadensis) laten een duidelijke verbetering in het vreemdelingenrecht precisie met ervaring 3 en zeeschildpad soorten opdruk op hun natal stranden hatchlings en terug te keren als volwassenen 4-6. Bijvoorbeeld, de grote ruimte- en tijdschalen die veel dieren Navigeer dikwijls uitsluiten onderzoeken zowel type informatie dat deze dieren mogelijk leren en hoe deze zijn verkregen. Onderzoekers vaak geconfronteerd met de logistieke problemen te detecteren en lokaliseren van dieren bij het bewaken van het gedrag over dergelijke grote gebieden en termijnen, waardoor de soort te beperkenvan gegevens die kunnen worden verzameld en de conclusies die kunnen worden getrokken. Ook de directe, gecontroleerde manipulatie doelgedragingen vaak verboden door de ruimtelijke en tijdschalen typisch navigatie gedragingen, alsook door inherente logistieke problemen van veldonderzoek. Het vinden van dieren in hun natuurlijke habitat, het vangen en ze te manipuleren, en dan het verzamelen van gedrags-gegevens zonder per ongeluk het produceren van valse gedrag zijn grote uitdagingen van het werken met dieren in het gebied. Het design proeven met free opgezette dieren wordt vaak beperkt en de mogelijkheid om strenge, gecontroleerde veldexperimenten te verrichten naar de rol van cognitie in de navigatie is beperkt. Deze studie omzeilt veel van de voorgaande problemen van onderzoek naar de relatie tussen cognitie en navigatie in het veld door een nieuwe combinatie van farmacologische manipulatie en hoge-resolutie traceren van dieren vrijelijk navigeren onder veldomstandigheden. Scopolamine, een muscarinische acetylcholinereceptoren (mAChR) antagonisten, is aangetoond dat ruimtelijke geheugenvorming en oproepen blokkeren blokkeert cholinerge activiteit in de hersenen van een verscheidenheid van gewervelde taxa 18-24. Scopolamine kan effectief worden gebruikt loslopende dieren onder veldomstandigheden 11, 18 en een felle maar tijdelijk effect (bijvoorbeeld 6-8 uur bij reptielen). Farmacologie maakt de nauwkeurige manipulatie van cognitie rechtstreeks van invloed receptoren en hoge precisie radiotelemetrie maakt de waarneming van de effecten daarvan op het gedrag. Metingen op afstand aanvullend bij zowel hoge ruimtelijke (± 2,5 m) en tijd (15 min) resolutie mogelijk maken een nauwkeurige documentatie en kwantificering van diergedrag opzichte van de experimentele manipulatie van cognitie. Deze studie 11 werd uitgevoerd tussen mei en augustus 2013 en 2014 bij Chesapeake Farms, een 3.300 acre wildbeheer en landbouw onderzoeksgebied in Kent Co., MD, USA (39,194 ° N, 76,187 ° W). using pharmacological manipulation and high-precision radio telemetry to study the spatial cognition in free-ranging animals

het vermogen van het dier waar te nemen en te leren over zijn omgeving speelt een belangrijke rol in vele gedragsprocessen, zoals navigatie, migratie, dispersie en voederen. Echter, het begrip van de rol van cognitie in de ontwikkeling van navigatie-strategieën en de mechanismen die ten grondslag liggen aan deze strategieën beperkt door de methodologische problemen die betrokken zijn bij het toezicht, het manipuleren van de cognitie van, en het bijhouden van wilde dieren. Deze studie beschrijft een protocol voor de aanpak van de rol van cognitie in de navigatie dat farmacologische manipulatie van gedrag met hoge precisie radio telemetrie combineert. De aanpak maakt gebruik van scopolamine, een muscarine acetylcholine receptor antagonist, cognitieve ruimtelijke vaardigheden te manipuleren. Behandelde dieren worden vervolgens gecontroleerd met een hoge frequentie en hoge ruimtelijke resolutie via remote triangulatie. Dit protocol werd toegepast binnen een populatie van Oost sierschildpad (Chrysemys picta) die is bewoondseizoen kortstondige waterbronnen voor ~ 100 jaar, het verplaatsen tussen de verre bronnen met behulp van nauwkeurige (± 3,5 m), complex (dat wil zeggen, niet-lineair met een hoge tortuositeit die meerdere habitats doorkruisen) en voorspelbare routes geleerd vóór 4 jaar oud. Deze studie toonde aan dat de door deze schildpadden processen in overeenstemming zijn met de ruimtelijke vorming van het geheugen en de herinnering. Samen vormen deze resultaten zijn consistent met een rol ruimtelijke cognitie bij complexe navigatie en benadrukken de integratie van ecologische en farmacologische technieken in de studie van cognitie en navigatie.

Met behulp van de bovenstaande protocol, de rol van cognitie in de navigatie werd onderzocht in een populatie van Oost sierschildpad (Chrysemys picta) dat heeft ervaren seizoensgebonden kortstondige waterbronnen voor ~ 100 jaar.
