Endring av i utero electroporation (IUE) protokollen tillater merking av en glissen befolkning av nerveceller. Dette i sin tur gjør det mulig for identifisering og sporing av dendritter og aksoner av individuelle nevroner, den presise karakteriseringen av den laminære plasseringen av aksonale projeksjoner, og morfometrisk analyse. Iue kan også brukes til å undersøke forandringer i eksitabilitet avvilltype (WT) eller genmodifiserte nevroner ved å kombinere den med hel-celle opptak fra akutte skiver av electroporated hjerne. Disse to teknikker for å bidra til en bedre forståelse av koplingen av strukturell og funksjonell tilkobling og av de molekylære mekanismer som kontrollerer neuronal mangfold under utvikling.
