Carbonylen bekend verantwoordelijk zijn voor de instabiliteit van bio-olie tijdens zowel opslag en verwerking 1 2. De titratie hier gepresenteerde methode is een eenvoudige techniek die op betrouwbare het totale carbonylgehalte van bio-oliën kunnen kwantificeren. Slechts aldehyde en keton functionele groepen worden gekwantificeerd met behulp van deze methode; carbonzuur en lacton groepen niet gekwantificeerd. Voor analyse van bio-olie is kwantificering van carbonylgroepen door titratie traditioneel uitgevoerd volgens de methode van Nicolaides 3.
