La investigación sobre la neurotoxicidad del desarrollo inducida por la anestesia (AIDN) se ha centrado en los roedores, que no son ampliamente aplicables a los seres humanos. Los modelos de primates no humanos son más relevantes, pero son costo prohibitivos y difíciles de usar para la experimentación. El lechón, por el contrario, es un modelo animal clínicamente relevante y práctico, ideal para el estudio de la neurotoxicidad anestésica.
