CRISPR שימש לראשונה עבור מיקוד גנים בעכברים 12 ומאז הוחל על מינים אינספור, מן הצמחים לבני אדם 13 , 14 . עד כה, אין דיווח על מין אחד עמיד לעריכת הגנום CRISPR. שני השלבים המגבילים העיקריים של הדור של עכברים מהונדסים הם הזרקה של ביציות ואת ההשתלה מחדששל הביציות האלה לתוך נקבות מדומות בהיריון. למרות טכניקה זו תוארה על ידינו 15 ועוד 16 , שיפורים טכניים האחרונות עכבר embryology וטכניקות העברת הגן יש מהפכה בתהליך של יצירת עכברים מהונדסים גנטית. שיפורים אלה יתוארו כאן.
