Klebsiella pneumoniae is een bacterie die goed groeit onder zowel aërobe en anaërobe omstandigheden. K. pneumoniae is een belangrijk industriële micro-organisme die veel chemicaliën produceert. 1,3-propandiol is een waardevolle chemische stof die voornamelijk gebruikt wordt als monomeer om polytrimethylentereftalaat te synthetiseren. Polytrimethylentereftalaat is een biologisch afbreekbare polyester die betere eigenschappen vertoont dan die van 1,2-propandiol, butaandiol of ethyleenglycol 1 . 1,3-propandiol wordt geproduceerd door K. pneumoniae onder gebruikmaking van glycerol als een substraat in zuurstofbeperkte condities 2 . 2,3-butaandiol en zijn derivaten hebben toepassingen op het gebied van kunststoffen, oplosmiddelproductie en synthetische rubber en hebben het potentieel om als biobrandstof 3 te gebruiken .
