Dit robuuste zelforganiserende systeem wordt echter progressief verstoord tijdens de tumorontwikkeling. Bij het begin van de tumorontwikkeling ontstaan ​​individuele mutante cellen die voortkomen uit oncogene activatie of tumor-suppressor gen inactivatie binnen een epitheliale laag. Wanneer deze getransformeerde &quot;pro-tumorcel&quot; een onderdrukkende omgeving ontwricht, epitheliale organisatie verstoord en ongecontroleerde proliferatie begint, vindt tumorigenese plaats 1 .
