O ácido N-acetilneuraminico (Neu5Ac) e o ácido N-glicolneuraminico (Neu5Gc) são os ácidos sialicos mais comuns na maioria dos mamíferos 1 . Embora capaz de sintetizar Neu5Ac de forma endógena, os seres humanos não são capazes de produzir Neu5Gc devido a uma deleção primária de exão no gene CMAH que codifica uma hidroxilase 2 , 3 de CMP-Neu5Ac. A CMAH (hidroxilase de ácido citidina monofosfato-N-acetilneuramínico) é responsável pela oxidação de ácidos citidina monofosfato-N-acetilneuraminico em mamíferos.
