מודלים בעלי חיים חולדה היה בשימוש נרחב ברפואה הרבייה, לרבות העובר השתלת השחלות1,2. עם זאת, בעבר, חקר התפתחות מערכת הרבייה אצל מכרסמים מבוסס על בחינה היסטולוגית חד פעמית של רקמות נכרת, המחקר האורך של איבר הרבייה היומיומית שינויים שלא היה אפשרי חולדות3. אולטרסאונד כבר בשימוש נרחב בהטכנולוגיה סייעה הרבייה אצל בני אדם במשך 30 שנה, אך זו טכנולוגיה יקר רק הוחלה על חולדות לאחרונה.
