השימוש בטכניקות אלקטרופיזיולוגיות הוא כלי חיוני עבור ויוו חקירת פונקציה במערכת העצבים ההיקפית בהפרעות נוירולוגיות. עצב קונבנציונאלי הולכה שיטות לנצל גירויים supramaximal להקליט משרעת פוטנציאל פעולה מוטורית וזמן ההשהיה. טכניקות אלה ולכן לספק מידע שימושי על מספר ניצוח סיבים ועל את מהירות הולכה של הסיבים המהירים ביותר. כלי משלים חשוב הוא זה של בדיקת עצב דעתנית. טכניקה זו משתמשת דפוסים מתוחכמים גירוי אלקטרופיזיולוגיות להערכת בעקיפין את המאפיינים ביופיזיקלי של העצבים ההיקפיים, כגון הפעילות של תעלות יונים, משאבות תלויי-אנרגיה, תהליכי חילוף יונים ו קרומית אפשרית 1.

בעלי החיים הם מרדימים עם איזופלוריין, פיקוח בקפידה כדי להבטיח עומק קבוע והולם של הרדמה. טמפרטורת הגוף, קצב הנשימה, קצב הלב, הרוויה של החמצן בדם מנוטרים באופן רציף. דעתנית עצב מחקרים מבוצעים באמצעות מלעורית גירוי של עצב הגומד, הקלטה של השרירים hypothenar של הכפה forelimb. עם מיקום האלקטרודות הנכון, נרשם פוטנציאלי פעולה ברור מתחם שריר זה מגביר משרעת עם הגדלת עוצמת הגירוי. תוכנית אוטומטית ואז הוא מנוצל כדי לספק סדרה של פולסים חשמליים המניבות 5 צעדים ספציפיים דעתנית ברצף הבא: גירוי תגובה התנהגות, כוח משך זמן קבוע, סף electrotonus, זרם-סף הקשר, מחזור השחזור.
