唾液腺は、様々 な神経学的および力学的刺激1に対して唾を生成します。刺激は、腺のアドレナリン作動性およびコリン作動性受容体に交感神経と副交感神経の神経系を介して実行されます。ピロカルピンは、ムスカリン受容体に作用する主にコリン作動性、パラ交感神経エージェントです。唾液腺には、M31ムスカリン性アセチルコリン受容体に作用して唾液の生産を誘発します。ピロカルピン投与唾液の分泌唾液腺の刺激に応答する能力の指標であるし、唾液腺の機能の尺度として使用されます。
