At opnå cortisol fra hår prøver er en enkel og acceptable alternativ til at bruge spyt, serum eller urin prøver1,2. Hår cortisol indeholder en retrospektiv repræsentation af hypothalamus-hypofyse-binyrer (HPA) aksen funktion over tid. Ca. 3 cm af hår fra hovedbunden er lig med gennemsnitlig cortisol release for sidste 3 måneder1. Dog forskere støder på unikke udfordringer, når du forsøger at indsamle hår prøver på tværs af forskellige befolkningsgrupper. I den afrikanske amerikanske kultur, især blandt kvinder, er hovedbund hår et meget personligt og vigtigt aspekt af deres kropsbillede3,4. Yderligere, historiske oplevelser (fx, Tuskegee eksperimenter) fortsætte med at fremme mistillid i forskning proces5. Nogle afrikanske amerikansk folklore og kulturelle overbevisninger foreslår også, at eksemplet hår kunne anvendes i ritualer, der kan forårsage skade6,7. Forskere skal være opmærksom på potentielle udfordringer, som de kan ansigt i undersøgelser, når African American deltagerne bliver bedt om at give håret prøver.

For eksempel, afroamerikanere kan have glat, tynd, curly, kinky, grove, eller en kombination af disse hårtyper, hver kræver forskellige teknikker til at indsamle og sikre passende hår prøver til forarbejdning. De seneste undersøgelser af prøver af African American teenagere8, såvel som multi-etnisk prøver9, viste, at indsamling af hår for cortisol niveau måling var acceptabel blandt African American deltagere. I øjeblikket, der er ingen visuel uddannelse procedurer designet til at give forskere med dygtighed og kulturelle viden til at indsamle hår prøver i afro-amerikanere. Formålet med dette oplæg er at præsentere en kulturelt orienteret protokol for at hjælpe forskerne med at få tilstrækkelig hår prøver fra African American deltagere. I vores undersøgelse, 21 afroamerikanere (gennemsnitsalder = 75; SD = 6.9; 85% kvindelige) indvilliget i at deltage. Fire deltagere (19%) nægtede at give en hår prøve og to (9,5%) ikke kunne give en prøve, fordi deres hår var for kort. Ialt 15 hår prøver blev indhentet og behandlet (tabel 2).
