التعب هو أحد العوامل الرئيسية التي تهدد صحة الإنسان1. في العقود الماضية، أثبتت البحوث المختلفة أن التعب آثار محيطيا لكن يحركها مركزياً، ويقترن دائماً مع الاضطرابات العاطفية والمعرفية. أول من اقترح فيزيولوجي الإيطالية Mosso ألف كلمة "التعب المركزي"2. ومن يعرف عموما محدودة النشاط التطوعي وضعف الإدراك بسبب الخلل في انتقال دفعة في الجهاز العصبي المركزي (CNS)3. بالمقارنة مع العضلات المحيطية والإرهاق، التعب المركزي يؤكد التغييرات في الجهاز العصبي المركزي، فضلا عن ما يترتب عليها من الاضطرابات النفسية/السلوكية، بما في ذلك الاكتئاب والقلق، وضعف الإدراك، وفقدان الذاكرة. دراسة واحدة تبين أن عوامل عديدة يمكن أن تحدث التعب المركزي، بين النشاط البدني المفرط والضغوط النفسية التي هي غنى جداً4. أما بالنسبة للآلية المرضية، شرح نظريات مثل فرضية المسار التربتوفان-كينورينيني5 التغييرات في مسارات معينة؛ ومع ذلك، إجراء دراسات أكثر تعمقاً لا يزال يتعين الكشف عن الارتباطات الوسطى-الطرفية من التعب المركزي.
