חסימות מעיים הם סתימה חלקית או מלאה במעי קטן או גדול אשר מונע מזון מעוכל, נוזלים וגז עוברים דרך המעיים של1. בשל החסימה, החסימה גורם לדפנות כדי להפוך לעבות, שצמצם את לומן2. חסימת מעיים יכולה להתרחש כתוצאה ניתוחי בטן או אגן לגרום היווצרות רקמת אדהזיה בטן או מהפרעות במערכת העיכול כגון מחלות מעי דלקתיות (מחלת קרוהן), דיברטיקוליטיס, בקע, התפתלות המעים, stricture, התפשלות מעיים, עצירות, פקק צואה, חסם מעיים מדומה, סרטן וגידולים3,4,5. חסימות מעיים במקרים אלה לעיתים קרובות להוביל היפרטרופיה של tunica muscularis של המעי6.
פו של לומן המניע distention מעיים, ומגביר את עובי שכבת השריר החלק סביב החסם בתגובה צורך להמשיך הפריסטלטיקה פונקציונלי7,8,9,10, 11,12,13. מודלים חייתיים של פו מעיים פותחו כדי ללמוד היפרטרופיה של השריר החלק עכברים7, חולדות10, שרקנים11, כלבים12ו חתולים13 המתפתחים באופן עקבי היפרטרופיה דומה בתוך שכבות שריר המעי.
דגם העכבר של פו מעיים היא הדרך הכי חסכוניות כדי ליצור וללמוד חסימות מעיים ויוו. חסימות מעי דק מתבצעות בעכברים באמצעות טבעת סיליקון בניתוח ממוקמים סביב מעי. העכברים פו הראו עלייה מוקדם מספר התאים (היפרפלזיה), וכן הגדלה עובי שכבת השריר (היפרטרופיה) אחרי פו ניתוח8,15.
