Vi udviklede en low-cost, nemme-hen til-opbygge og kompakt flyvning mill for små insekter som P. quercivorus (4-5 mm i kropslængde og 4-6 mg i kropsvægt). Vores fly møllen bestod kun almindelige elementer såsom en nål, en IR LED, en photo sensor, øjeblikkelige lim, osv., og kræver ikke nogen sofistikeret, dyre eller sjældne elementer såsom computer-kontrollerede elektriske enheder. Dyr, der vandrer lange afstande på jagt efter mad og hjælpere. Overflytter dyr kan undertiden være uønskede kammerater. Kvindelige ambrosia Bille, Platypus quercivorus (Murayama), er en kendt vektor af de svampe patogen, Raffaelea quercivora Kubono et Shin-Ito. Dette patogen forårsager massive dødelighed af Fagaceae træer (japansk egens visnesyge) og en høj grad af dødelighed1. Siden 1980, denne sygdom har været at udvide over hele Japan, og er blevet et alvorligt problem2.
P. quercivorus er et lille insekt (4-5 mm i kropslængde og 4-6 mg i kropsvægt), og årlig udvidelse af sygdommen tyder på, at de er i stand til at flyve op til flere km3,4. Den mandlige P. quercivorus lokaliserer en værten træet og frigiver en sammenlægning pheromone, der tiltrækker både hanner og hunner5. Således, udvidelse af sygdommen er muligvis relateret til migrerende evne til denne Bille. Omfang som beetle kan flyve er imidlertid stadig uklart. Derudover hunnen er større end hannerne6 (kvindelig: 4,6 mm og mandlige: 4,5 mm) og mandlige biller søge efter et mål træ, Angiv tunnelen inde i træet og så tiltrække hunnen. I betragtning af disse seksuelle forskelle i kropsstørrelse og rollen som flyvning i deres liv, seksuelle forskelle kan findes i flyvning evne, men forskellen i evne er fortsat uklart.
Generelt er det yderst vanskeligt at måle vandrende evne i feltet, især flyvning evne, på grund af den brede vifte af vandrende området. Vandrende evne er blevet målt i laboratorier på tøjret betingelser, såsom en flyvning mill system, for over 60 år7,8,9,10,11,12 , 13. flyvning mill systemer har vist, at nogle insekter har evnen til langdistance flyvning. For eksempel, den længste flyvning afstand af mountain pine beetle i en flyvning mølle var over 24 km14, og Tetrastichus planipennisi Yang fløj maksimalt over 7 km15. Selv om flyvning møllen er en almindeligt tilgængelige værktøj, resultere biologiske assays med et levende dyr ofte i meget store individuelle forskelle. For at overvinde denne, er mange målinger, gentages flere gange, forpligtet til at opnå pålidelige skøn over gennemsnitlige spredning kapacitet. Derfor, flere personer bør anvendes på samme tid for hurtig indsamling af en tilstrækkelig mængde data. Men samtidige forsøg kræver en større plads, flere eksperimentelle opsætninger, og er dyrere i forhold til en enkelt målesystem. Derfor, flight møllen skal være lav pris, bør være let bygget med almindeligt tilgængelige varer og kompakt i størrelse. Derudover bør forsøgsmetoden ikke være kompliceret eller har brug for en dygtig operatør.
I denne undersøgelse, vi samlet en lille, billig flyrejse mill (figur 1 og figur 2), der let kunne anvendes i eksperimenter, og målt flyvning evne til ambrosia Bille, P. quercivorus.

Ambrosia Bille, Platypus quercivorus (Murayama), er vektoren af et svampe patogen, der forårsager massive dødelighed af Fagaceae træer (japansk egens visnesyge). Ved at gennemføre eksperimenter ved hjælp af denne flyvning mill, fandt vi, at P. quercivorus kan flyve mindst 27 km. Dette muliggør eksperimentatorer at opnå en tilstrækkelig mængde af data inden for en kort periode.

I disse eksperimenter viste omkring 50% af biller anvendes til flyvning mill én eller flere omdrejninger. Når den plast del bestået en virtuel linje mellem sensoren og LED, den registrerede spænding ændret fra 0 V til ca 6,5 V, og varigheden af en forbigående var inden for 10-20 ms, afhængig af flyvning hastighed.
