Feromon identifikation er en gren af naturstofkemi. Fremskridt i feromon forskning har været delvis begrænset på grund af karakteren af pheromone molekylerne, selv. Havlampret (Petromyzon marinus) er en ideel hvirveldyr model til at studere pheromone kommunikation, fordi disse fisk er stærkt afhængige af olfaktoriske påvisning af kemiske signaler at mægle anadrome liv historien består af tre særskilte faser: larver, unge og voksne. the identification of sea lamprey pheromones using bioassay-guided fractionation

Bioassay-styrede fraktionering er en iterativ fremgangsmåde, der bruger resultaterne af fysiologiske og adfærdsmæssige bioassays guide isolering og identifikation af en aktiv pheromone sammensatte. Denne metode har resulteret i den vellykkede karakterisering af de kemiske signaler der fungerer som feromoner i en lang række dyrearter. Havet lampretter er afhængige af lugtesansen til at opdage pheromones at mægle adfærdsmæssige eller fysiologiske reaktioner.
