无细胞基因表达反应对生物化学、生物技术和合成生物学的各种应用都有很大的兴趣。蛋白质的无细胞表达有助于制备纯蛋白样品, 这是结构生物学中大量研究的基础。例如, 无细胞系统被成功地用于蛋白配合物1或膜蛋白2的表达, 这是很难用细胞表达的方式产生的。值得注意的是, 无细胞基因表达反应也被用来阐明基因编码的结构, 从尼伦伯格分享和 Matthaei 在 1961年3的开创性实验开始。
