DMD הוא הסוג הנפוץ ביותר של ניוון עם שכיחות של אחד לכל 3,500 ל 5,000 בחורים היילוד ברחבי העולם4,5. אנשים בדרך כלל לפתח שרירים מתקדמת נמק, אובדן של הליכה עצמאית על ידי בגיל ההתבגרות המוקדם, ומוות בעשורים השני כדי השלישי של חייהם עקב אי ספיקת לב, כשל נשימתי6.
