Sepsis er en global sundhedsprioritet og forårsager et stort antal dødsfald i intensivafdelinger (ICUs)3. Som den gyldne standard eksperimentel model i forskning på polymikrobiel sepsis, cecal ligation og punktering (CLP) er en operation karakteriseret ved cecum ligation og perforation, som bidrager til polymikrobiel peritonitis og sepsis8,9 . Den patofysiologiske proces og cytokin profilerne, sammen med kinetik og størrelsesorden, svarer til klinisk sepsis. Positionen af ligation, nålestørrelse, der anvendes til punktering, og antallet af cecal punkteringer er vigtige faktorer, der påvirker dødeligheden efter CLP.
Den nosokomielle lungebetændelse er den førende årsag til dødelighed blandt kritisk syge patienter med sepsis. Den vigtigste type organismer, der forårsager svær sepsis, omfatter Staphylococcus aureus (20,5%), Pseudomonas Species (19,9%), Enterobacteriacae (hovedsagelig E. coli, 16,0%) og svampe (19%).
