敗血症性肺炎は敗血症患者の死亡の主な原因である。重症敗血症を引き起こす主な種類の生物には、黄色ブドウ球菌(20.5%)、シュードモナス種(19.9%)、腸内細菌科(主に大腸菌、16.0%)、真菌(19%)が含まれる。一方、最近の研究は、グラム陰性の感染症3とほぼ同じくらい一般的であるグラム陽性生物の発生率の増加を示唆している。
