בתוך עצבי הגולגולת, המידע הרלוונטי ביותר העומד בפני הדלקת הקורטיתית והתעוררות מתבצעת על-ידי סיבי הטריברינאלה10, כנראה עקב התחברות מטריברית חזקה למערכת ההפעלה המקולרית העולה (אראס)11. בין מבני מאראס, ה-לוקוס כפיית (LC) מקבל כניסות מודולים11 ו מודולריטיות התעוררות12,13, ופעילותה משתנה עם התלמיד מידה14,15,16,17,18. למרות הקשר בין פעילות מנוחה LC ביצועים קוגניטיביים הוא מורכב, שיפור הפעילות הקשורות של פעילות LC מוביל התעוררות משויך19 התלמיד mydriasis20 וביצועים קוגניטיביים משופרת21. יש וריאציה אמינה בין פעילות LC לבין גודל התלמיד, והאחרון נחשב כיום פרוקסי של פעילות נוראדררגית מרכזית22,23,24,25,26.
