好中球は最も豊富な白血球であり、ヒト1の白血球集団全体の50〜70%を占める。好中球は、急性炎症時の主要な応答者の1つである。好中球は、組織常駐細胞2、3、4によって放出されるサイトカインおよびケモカインの誘導を介して炎症部位にリクルートすることができるが、これは好中球と血管内皮細胞5の表面上の細胞接着分子との相互作用によって媒介される。好中球は、防御をホストする基礎であり、活性酸素種(ROS)および他の組織損傷分子3、6の放出を介して組織に損傷を与える強力な能力のために、病理的炎症反応の役割を果たす。
