In de hier gepresenteerde studie hebben we onderzocht of oudere volwassenen baat zouden kunnen hebben bij werkgeheugentraining en of het verband houdt met het beginniveau van hun basiscognitie. In veel cognitieve trainingsstudies wordt de dual n-back taak gebruikt als een methode van werkgeheugen (WM) training. WM is een gemeenschappelijk doelwit van cognitieve interventies vanwege het belang ervan voor andere intellectuele functies op een hoger niveau1. Er is echter veel gediscussieerd over de doeltreffendheid van een dergelijke opleiding en het potentieel ervan voor het creëren van een meer algemene verbetering van de cognitie (voor meta-analyse, zie2,3,4,5,6,7,14 en voor beoordelingen, zie4,8,9,10,11,12,13). Terwijl sommige onderzoekers beweren dat ''... er was geen overtuigend bewijs van de veralgemening van werkgeheugentraining naar andere vaardigheden.''4, anderen presenteren meta-analytische gegevens, die zeer significante effecten van WM-training laten zien2,3,5,6,11. Het afzonderlijke probleem is de effectiviteit van WM bij ouderen. Er wordt aangenomen dat verschillende elementen de voordelen van geheugentrainingvoorspellen 26. Sommige van deze factoren lijken potentiële moderators van WM-trainingseffectiviteit21te zijn . Mentale capaciteit, die wordt beschreven als de basis cognitieve capaciteit of algemene cognitieve hulpbron, lijkt een van de sterkste keuzes voor deze positie. Een soortgelijk fenomeen wordt waargenomen in onderwijsonderzoek, waar het wordt aangeduid als het Matthew-effect28, een observatie dat mensen met aanvankelijk betere vaardigheden nog meer verbeteren in vergelijking met mensen met een voorlopig lager niveau in kwestie.
Het is echter tot nadenken stemmend dat er niet zo veel verslagen over dit onderwerp zijn gepubliceerd21,29. Bovendien worden zelfs aanzienlijke individuele verschillen, vooral als het gaat om de oudere bevolking, vaak onbeheerd gelaten tijdens gegevensanalyse en interpretatie30. In deze studie onderzoeken we de impact van het initiële niveau van werkgeheugencapaciteit op het succes van WM-trainingen in de groep gezonde oudere volwassenen. Om elk element van de opleidingsregimes tussen experimentele en controlegroepen zo gelijk mogelijk te houden, hebben we een actief ontwerp van de controlegroep gebruikt. Daarom bleef de trainingsinhoud (WM versus semantisch geheugen) de enige cruciale factor die het verwachte verschil in de trainingsresultaten bepaalt. Beide groepen voerden geautomatiseerde, thuistrainingen uit. Leden van de experimentele groep werden toegewezen aan een adaptief dubbel n-back trainingsprogramma en een actieve controlegroep getraind met een taak op basis van een semantische geheugenquiz. Nieuw in de aanpak hierbij is de nadruk op de eerste evaluatie van het cognitieve niveau van de deelnemers door het beoordelen van hun werkgeheugencapaciteit (WMC). Bovendien is de methode voor het beoordelen van het initiële WMC-niveau dat we in dit artikel presenteren, een effectief hulpmiddel gebleken om onderscheid te maken tussen mensen die wel en niet succesvol zullen zijn tijdens de daaropvolgende training in het werkgeheugen. We hebben eerder de resultaten van deze studie beschreven en gepubliceerd44. Daarom richten we ons in dit artikel op een gedetailleerde beschrijving van het protocol dat we hebben gebruikt.

working memory training for older participants: a control group training regimen and initial intellectual functioning assessment

De effectiviteit van cognitieve trainingsinterventies wordt onlangs sterk besproken. Er is geen consensus over wat voor soort opleidingsregime het meest effectief is. Ook worden individuele kenmerken als voorspellers van trainingsresultaten nog onderzocht. In dit artikel laten we de poging zien om dit probleem aan te pakken door niet alleen de impact van wm-training (Working Memory) op cognitieve effectiviteit bij oudere volwassenen te onderzoeken, maar ook de invloed van de initiële WM-capaciteit (WMC) op de uitkomst van de training. We beschrijven in detail hoe je 5 weken adaptieve dual n-back training uitvoert met een actieve controlegroep (geheugenquiz). We richten ons hier op technische aspecten van de training en op de eerste beoordeling van het WMC van de deelnemers. De evaluatie van pre- en posttrainingsprestaties van andere cognitieve dimensies was gebaseerd op de resultaten van tests van geheugenupdates, remming, aandachtsverschuiving, kortetermijngeheugen (STM) en redeneren. We hebben vastgesteld dat het initiële niveau van WMC de efficiëntie van de n-back trainingsinterventie voorspelt. We hebben ook de verbetering na de training opgemerkt in bijna alle aspecten van cognitief functioneren die we hebben gemeten, maar die effecten waren meestal interventieonafhankelijk.

Trainingsgerelateerde effecten
85 proefpersonen namen deel aan het onderzoek (29 waren mannelijk) en ze waren gemiddeld 66,7 jaar oud. Vanwege technische problemen werden gegevens van één deelnemer aan de n-back trainingsgroep niet geregistreerd.
