يؤثر التعديل Optogenetic من الدوائر العصبية في الفئران تتحرك بحرية على السلوك الحاد والطويل الأجل. هذه الطريقة قادرة على أداء التلاعب من الخلايا العصبية واحدة والإفراج عن منطقة محددة الارسال، وتصل إلى الدوائر الخلايا العصبية بأكملها في الجهاز العصبي المركزي، ويسمح القياس المباشر للنتائج السلوكية. تُعبّر الخلايا العصبية عن أدوات optogenetic عن طريق حقن النواقل الفيروسية التي تحمل الحمض النووي المفضل، مثل Channelrhodopsin2 (ChR2). يتم إحضار الضوء إلى مناطق محددة في الدماغ عن طريق الغرسات البصرية المزمنة التي تنتهي مباشرة فوق المنطقة المستهدفة. بعد أسبوعين من الانتعاش والتعبير عن الأداة المناسبة ، يمكن استخدام الفئران بشكل متكرر للاختبارات السلوكية مع التحفيز البصري للخلايا العصبية ذات الاهتمام.
