Een nieuwe maatregel voor tactiele ruimtelijke scherpte, tactiel AD, wordt gepresenteerd. In dit systeem schuift een paar hoeken passief over het geïmmobiliseerde wijsvingerpad van een onderwerp. Aanrakingsperceptie is een fundamentele vorm van de sensaties die door het somatosensorische systeem worden verwerkt, inclusief haptische waarneming en tactiele waarneming. Passieve tactiele waarneming, in tegenstelling tot actieve exploratie, betekent dat het object wordt bewogen om contact te maken met statische huid1,2. Net als in andere betekenissen wordt ruimtelijke resolutie in tactiele waarneming, ook wel tactiele ruimtelijke scherpte, meestal weergegeven door de tactiele drempel, detectiedrempel of discriminatiedrempel2,3. In de afgelopen 100 jaar is de tweepuntsdrempel vaak gebruikt als maat voor tactiele ruimtelijke scherpte4. Veel studies hebben echter aangetoond dat de tweepuntsdrempel een ongeldige index van tactiele ruimtelijke capaciteit is, omdat tweepuntsdiscriminatie (TPD) niet kan uitsluiten dat niet-specifieke signalen (bijvoorbeeld, als twee punten te dichtbij zijn, kunnen ze een enkel afferent ontvankelijk veld lokaliseren, dat gemakkelijk verhoogde neurale activiteit oproept) en een stabiel criterium handhaven voor antwoorden3,4,5. Vanwege het aantal nadelen van TPD zijn verschillende nieuwe en veelbelovende methoden ontwikkeld als vervanging, zoals tactiele rasporiëntatie (GO)3,6, tweepuntsoriëntatiediscriminatie5, verhoogde letterherkenning, gap detection7, dot patterns, Landolt C rings8en angle discrimination (AD)9,10. Op dit moment wordt GO, vanwege de voordelen bij het exploiteren van GO, evenals de ruimtelijke structuur en complexiteit van de gebruikte stimulus, steeds vaker gebruikt om tactiele ruimtelijke scherpte11 , 12,13te meten .
Hoewel tactiele GO wordt verondersteld te vertrouwen op onderliggende ruimtelijke mechanismen, waardoor een betrouwbare maatstaf voor tactiele ruimtelijke scherpte wordt opgeleverd, wordt nog steeds gediscussieerd over de vraag of go-prestaties gedeeltelijk worden beïnvloed door niet-patiale signalen14 (bijv. intensieve tekenen die een aanwijzing kunnen geven om het verschil tussen oriëntatieprikkels te identificeren). Bovendien bestaat GO alleen uit eenvoudige ruimtelijke oriëntatietaken (d.w.z. horizontaal en verticaal) en omvat het voornamelijk sensorische verwerking, die het gebruik ervan beperkt bij het verkennen van het hiërarchische samenspel tussen tactiele primaire verwerking in de primaire somatosensorische cortex en tactiele geavanceerde bezit waarbij de achterste pariëtale cortex (PPC) en supramarginale gyrus (SMG)15,16,17betrokken zijn. Om deze nadelen te compenseren , werd tactiel AD ontwikkeld om tactiele ruimtelijke scherpte9,10te meten . In AD schuift een paar hoeken passief over de vingertop. De hoeken variëren in grootte en het onderwerp moet bepalen welke van de hoeken groter is. Om deze taak consequent te volbrengen, moeten ruimtelijke kenmerken van tactiele hoeken worden weergegeven en opgeslagen in het werkgeheugen en vervolgens worden vergeleken en onderscheiden. Daarom omvat tactiele AD niet alleen primaire verwerking, maar ook geavanceerde cognitie van tactiele perceptie, zoals werkgeheugen en aandacht.
Net als bij verschillende lijnoriëntatieperceptietests wordt het onderwerp in tactiel AD achtereenvolgens gepresenteerd met één referentiehoek en één vergelijkingshoek en wordt gevraagd aan te geven welke de grotere hoek18,19,20,21is . De lijnen die de hoeken samenstellen zijn gelijk in lengte en symmetrisch verdeeld over een denkbeeldige bisector. Door de ruimtelijke dimensies van de lijnen symmetrisch te veranderen, kunnen alle soorten verhoogde vlakhoeken worden gemaakt. Daarom is een cruciaal voordeel van deze methode dat de gedifferentieerde hoeken vergelijkbare ruimtelijke structuren hebben. Bovendien is de ruimtelijke representatie in het AD sequentieeler dan die in GO. De AD-drempel levert echter bewijs dat tactiele ruimtelijke scherpte voldoende is om ruimtelijke discriminatie tussen objecten22mogelijk te maken . Bovendien kan de tactiele ruimtelijke waarneming van de hoek van punt tot lijn worden ervaren en ten slotte een tweedimensionale vlakhoek vormen waarin niet-patiale signalen slechts een kleine rol kunnen spelen.
De AD-drempelwaarde bleek te stijgen naarmate de leeftijd toenam, wat het gevolg kan zijn van de behoefte aan hoge cognitieve belasting in de tactiele AD-taak. Het kan dus een monitoringmechanisme bieden bij de diagnose cognitieve stoornissen9,10. Hoewel de prestaties van ad worden beïnvloed door leeftijdsgebonden achteruitgang, kan deze bij jongeren aanzienlijk worden verbeterd door permanente training of vergelijkbare tactiele taaktraining23. Bovendien toonden fMRI-studies aan dat een vertraagde match-to-sample tactiele hoektaak bepaalde corticale gebieden activeerde die verantwoordelijk zijn voor het werkgeheugen, zoals de achterste pariëtale cortex17,24. Deze bevindingen suggereren dat tactiele hoekdiscriminatie een veelbelovende maatregel is voor tactiele ruimtelijke scherpte met geavanceerde cognitie. Hier worden de tactiele AD-apparatuur en het gebruik ervan in detail beschreven. Andere tactiele onderzoekers kunnen de AD-apparatuur reproduceren en gebruiken in hun onderzoek.
De tactiele AD-apparatuur, of tactiele semiautomatische passieve vingerhoekstimulator (TSPAS), gebruikt een elektronische dia om een paar hoekprikkels over te brengen om passief over de huid te glijden (figuur 1). De armen van de proefpersonen liggen comfortabel, knielen op een tafelblad. De rechterhand zit op een handplaat in de tafel en een wijsvingerpad bevindt zich iets onder de opening van de plaat. Computersoftware kan de dia bedienen, met een vaste snelheid verplaatsen en naar voren en naar achteren verplaatsen. Naarmate de dia vooruit beweegt, glijden de hoekprikkels passief over de huid met een vaste snelheid vanaf de vingertop. Wanneer de dia achteruit beweegt naar de beginpositie en verandert in een ander paar hoekprikkels, moet het onderwerp de wijsvinger omhoog tillen en wachten tot een bestelling deze weer lichtjes bij de opening plaatst. Zo presenteert de apparatuur tactiele hoekprikkels met een gecontroleerde snelheid, stabiele contactduur en constant interstimulusinterval. Het onderwerp rapporteert mondeling een volgnummer en de experimenteerder registreert het als een reactie en gaat verder met het uitvoeren van de volgende proef.

tactile semiautomatic passive-finger angle stimulator (tspas)

Passieve tactiele waarneming is het vermogen om passief en statisch stimulusinformatie uit de huid waar te nemen; het vermogen om ruimtelijke informatie te voelen is bijvoorbeeld het sterkst in de huid op de handen. Dit vermogen wordt tactiele ruimtelijke scherptegenaamd en wordt gemeten aan de hand van de tactiele drempel of discriminatiedrempel. Op dit moment wordt de tweepuntsdrempel op grote schaal gebruikt als maatstaf voor tactiele ruimtelijke scherpte, hoewel veel studies hebben aangetoond dat er kritieke tekorten bestaan in tweepuntsdiscriminatie. Daarom werd een computergestuurd tactiel stimulussysteem ontwikkeld, de tactiele semiautomatiseerde passieve vingerhoekstimulator (TSPAS), met behulp van de tactiele hoekdiscriminatiedrempel als nieuwe maatregel voor tactiele ruimtelijke scherpte. De TSPAS is een eenvoudig, eenvoudig te bedienen systeem dat verhoogde hoekprikkels toepast op het passieve vingerpad van een proefpersoon, terwijl de bewegingssnelheid, afstand en contactduur worden gecontroleerd. De componenten van het TSPAS worden in detail beschreven, evenals de procedure voor de berekening van de drempel voor tactiele hoekdiscriminatie.

In deze studie werden de 3AFC (3-alternatieve gedwongen keuze) techniek en de logistieke curve gebruikt om de tactiele AD-drempel te schatten. Deelnemers kregen de opdracht om de grootste van de waargenomen twee hoeken mondeling te rapporteren, of als ze het verschil niet ontdekten, konden ze hetzelfde aangeven.
