Fumar cigarrillos sigue siendo una de las principales causas de enfermedades prevenibles en los Estados Unidos a pesar de la disminución constante en el número de adultos fumadores de cigarrillos en los últimos 50-60 años1. Es ampliamente conocido que fumar está relacionado con múltiples enfermedades de los pulmones y la sangre, incluida la enfermedad pulmonar obstructiva crónica (EPOC), un grupo de enfermedades que incluye enfisema y bronquitis crónica2,3,4. Según el Centro para el Control y la Prevención de Enfermedades (CDC), en 2014, la EPOC fue la tercera causa principal de muerte en los Estados Unidos con más de 15 millones de estadounidenses que sufren de esta enfermedad5.
El CS también se ha asociado recientemente a un riesgo más alto de desarrollar la hematopoyesis clónica (CH)6,7,una condición en la cual una sola célula de vástago hematopoyética produce desproporcionado un porcentaje grande de la sangre periférica de una persona. Esto que encuentra indica una conexión potencial entre fumar y la función de la médula. Cerca del 14% de los adultos en los Estados Unidos fueron reportados fumando cigarrillos en 2018. Los efectos del humo del cigarrillo (CS) sobre pulmones y enfermedades cardiovasculares se han estudiado extensamente, sin embargo, el impacto del CS en otros tejidos y órganos tales como sangre y médula permanece incompleto definido.
