אלח דם מוגדר כזיהום מוכח או חשוד בחיידקים, פטריות, וירוסים או טפילים, המלווה בתפקוד לקוי של איברים. קריטריונים של הלם ספטי מתקיימים כאשר קריסה קרדיווסקולרית נוספת אינה מגיבה לטיפול בנוזלים בלבד, ורמת לקטט של יותר מ-2 מילימול לליטר נמצאת2. אי ספיקת איברים הקשורה לאלח דם עלולה להתרחש בכל איבר, אך היא שכיחה מאוד במערכת הלב וכלי הדם, במוח, בכליה, בכבד ובריאה. רוב החולים הסובלים מאלח דם זקוקים לאינטובציה אנדוטרכאלית כדי לאבטח את דרכי הנשימה של המטופל, להגן מפני שאיפה, וליישם הנשמה חיובית עם שבריר גבוה של חמצן בהשראה כדי למנוע או להתגבר על היפוקסיה. על מנת לסבול צינור קנה הנשימה והנשמה מכנית, חולים בדרך כלל דורשים הרגעה.
