זיהומים בדרכי השתן (UTI) הם בין הזיהומים החיידקיים הנפוצים ביותר בבני אדם. כמעט מחצית מכל הנשים יחוו UTI סימפטומטי במהלך חייהם1. זיהומים המוגבלים לשלפוחית השתן יכולים לגרום לתסמינים בדרכי השתן כגון עלייה בתדירות השתן, דחיפות, המטוריה, בריחת שתן וכאב. כאשר הזיהום עולה למערכת השתן העליונה, חולים לפתח pyelonephritis, עם חולשה, חום, צמרמורות, וכאבי גב. יתר על כן, עד 20% מהחולים עם UTI סובלים מזיהומים חוזרים ונשנים וכתוצאה מכךירידהדרמטית ברגישות לאנטיביוטיקה 2,3,4. בשנים האחרונות, יש עניין גובר בטיפולים חדשניים לטיפול ומניעה של UTI חוזר. למרות הבנה טובה יותר של החסינות המולדת וההסתגלותית של דרכי השתן התחתונות ושל גורמי ארס החיידקים הדרושים לפלישה ולקולוניזציה, לא תורגמו שינויים רדיקליים במשטר הטיפול לפרקטיקה האורולוגית היומית2. על מנת ללמוד UTI פתוגנזה ורגישות ב vivo, בדיקת שחזור ולא פולשנית היא הכרחית.
