ההבחנה בין חומרי שרף מרוכבים לבין מבנה השן עם תאורה קונבנציונלית היא אתגר מכיוון שחומרי שרף מרוכבים מודרניים תואמים את התכונות האופטיות של חומר השן באופן כמעט מושלם10,11. האבחנה השגויה של שרף מרוכב גורמת לתרשימים דנטליים לא מדויקים, הערכת סיכונים שגויה של עששת ותכנון טיפול לא הולם11. יתר על כן, נתונים אפידמיולוגיים מזויפים12.
