난원공은 일반적으로 출생 후 몇 년 이내에 닫히는 배아 심장 발달의 잔재입니다1. 이전에는 965명의 정상 심장을 대상으로 한 부검 연구에서 27.3%의 사례에서 난원공(PFO)이 발견되었고2, 경식도 심초음파(TEE) 연구에서는 581명의 피험자 중 25.6%에서 발견되었다3. 성별이나 인종/민족에 대해서는 유의미한 차이가 없으며2,3,4, 부검 데이터에 따르면 성인의 PFO 직경은 1mm에서 19mm(평균: 4.9mm)까지 다양하며5세에 따라 증가합니다.
모든 허혈성 뇌졸중 사례의 최대 25%에서 광범위한 혈관, 혈청학적 및 심장 평가에도 불구하고 대혈관의 죽상동맥경화증, 소동맥 질환 또는 심장 색전증과 같은 명확한 요인에 원인을 기인할 수 없으므로 "잠복성 뇌졸중"6,7.
