骨は、骨形成細胞である骨芽細胞と骨吸収細胞である破骨細胞からなる密な結合組織です。骨折治癒は、骨芽細胞と破骨細胞の協調作用によって骨欠損の再生をもたらす生理学的プロセスである1。骨折がある場合、骨折部位の骨芽細胞および破骨細胞の活動は、骨治癒を決定する重要な要素のいくつかです2。骨折治癒が通常の経過から逸脱すると、結合の遅延、不和合、または非癒合が発生します。骨折は、骨折の癒合が9か月間失敗し、過去3か月間修復が進行しない場合、非癒合状態にあると言われます3。すべての骨折の約10%〜15%は、非癒合4に進行する可能性のある修復の遅延を経験します。すべての骨折の非癒合率は5%〜10%であり、関与する骨と骨折部位によって異なります5。
