DED מאופיין בהטרוגניות בסיבות ובחומרה 6,7,8 ועשוי להיות תוצאה של גורמים שונים כמו הזדקנות, מין9, עדשות מגע, תרופות אקטואליות או סיסטמיות 10, או מצבים קיימים כמו תסמונת סיוגרן 10. למרות שיש להם תסמינים קלים, DED משפיע על מיליוני אנשים ברחבי העולם, ומשפיע על איכות חייהם וגם על מערכת הבריאות6.

מוצרים המבוססים על דם חולקים עם דמעות הרכב דומה במונחים של מטבוליטים14, חלבונים, שומנים, ויטמינים, יונים, גורמי גדילה (GFs), תרכובות נוגדות חמצון 11 ואוסמולריות (300 mOsm/L)11. באמצעות הפעילות הסינרגטית של מרכיביהם, הם מקדמים את התחדשות אפיתל הקרנית, מעכבים את שחרורם של ציטוקינים דלקתיים ומגדילים את מספר תאי הגביע ואת הביטוי של מוצינים בלחמית 2,3.
