שתלי שבלול (CI) הם השיטה היעילה ביותר לטיפול באנשים עם ליקוי שמיעה תחושתי עצבי חמור עד עמוק. למרות ש-CIs משמשים ברחבי העולם, לא קיים מודל סטנדרטי לחקר האלקטרופיזיולוגיה וההיסטופתולוגיה בחולים או מודלים של בעלי חיים עם CI או להערכת מודלים חדשים של מערכי אלקטרודות. מודל של בעלי חיים גדולים עם מאפייני שבלול דומים לאלה של בני אדם עשוי לספק פלטפורמת מחקר והערכה למערכים מתקדמים ומותאמים לפני השימוש בהם בבני אדם.
