골관절염(OA)과 같은 관절 질환은 매우 만연하고 쇠약하게 하며 전 세계적으로 장애의 주요 원인입니다1. 미국에서만 OA는 2,700만 명의 환자에게 영향을 미치며 60세 이상 성인의 12.1%에서 발생하는것으로 추정됩니다. 안타깝게도 현재 관절 질환 관리에 사용되는 대부분의 약물은 완화 약물이며 효과적인 질병 수정 OA 약물(DMOAD)은 사용할 수 없습니다3. 이러한 충족되지 않은 의학적 요구는 주로 질병 메커니즘을 연구하고 잠재적인 DMOAD를 개발하기 위한 효과적인 모델의 부재에서 비롯됩니다. 종래의 2차원(2D) 세포 배양은 관절 조직의 3차원 특성을 반영하지 않으며, 조직 외식편의 배양은 종종 상당한 세포 사멸에 의해 방해를 받으며, 일반적으로 동적 조직 상호 연결을 복제하지 못한다4. 또한, 유전적 및 해부학적 차이는 동물모델의 생리학적 관련성을 현저히 감소시킨다4.
