副甲状腺(PG)は、ヒトや他の脊椎動物の首にある小さな楕円形の内分泌腺であり、副甲状腺ホルモンを産生および分泌して、血液および骨中のカルシウムおよびリンレベルを調節およびバランスさせます1。人間は通常、甲状腺葉の後ろのさまざまな場所に2対のPGを持っています。ヒトPGのサイズは通常6 mm x 4 mm x 2 mmで、重量は約35〜40 mg2です。PGの除去または損傷は、低カルシウム血症および低または検出不能レベルの副甲状腺ホルモンを特徴とする内分泌障害である副甲状腺機能低下症(HP)を引き起こし、けいれん様のけいれんから奇形の歯、慢性腎臓病まで幅広い症状を引き起こします。これらの合併症のいくつかは致命的です(例:.、心不全および発作)3,4,5;したがって、PGは体の代謝を調節し、生命を維持するのに不可欠です。

この論文は、術中のPG同定研究のためのシンプルで簡単で効果的なラットモデルの確立を報告します。甲状腺摘出手術におけるPGイメージング造影剤IONPをテストするための信頼できる動物モデルとして、外科的改変や遺伝子工学を伴わないネイティブSprague-Dawley(SD)ラットの使用を調査しました。このラットモデルは、PGとその周囲の微小環境の生理学的構造がヒトと非常に類似していることを示しており、ラットPGのサイズはマウスと比較して視覚的に検出できるほど大きい。ほとんどのラットは甲状腺の両側に1つのPGを持っています。このラットモデルの単純さと有効性は、甲状腺摘出術手術で術中のIONP増強PGイメージングを行うことによって実証されています。
