O 2 הוא אחד הפרמטרים הסביבתיים המרכזיים למערכות חיות, והידע על התפלגות O 2 והדינמיקה שלו חשוב למחקרים ביולוגיים רבים 1,2,3. הערכת חמצון רקמות באמצעות בדיקות זרחניות 4,5,6,7,8 ו- PLIM 9,10,11,12,13 צוברות פופולריות במחקר ביולוגי ורפואי 3,9,14,15,16, 17,18,19. הסיבה לכך היא ש- PLIM, בניגוד למדידות עוצמת פלואורסצנטיות או זרחן, אינו מושפע מגורמים חיצוניים כגון ריכוז הגשוש, הלבנה, עוצמת עירור, יישור אופטי, פיזור ואוטופלואורסצנציה.
