רוב חקירות הדימות המוחי המדעיות הבסיסיות, הפרה-קליניות והתרגומיות נרכשות מבעלי חיים מורדמים 1,2. חומרי הרדמה מקלים על הניסויים אך משפיעים ללא הרף על חילוף החומרים במוח ובגוף, לחץ הדם וקצב הלב3. סוג ההרדמה ומשך ומסלול מתן הנתונים מוסיפים משתנים מבלבלים לפרשנות הנתונים שיכולים לתרום לכשלים בשחזור ובתרגום4. צוואר בקבוק עיקרי של מחקרי דימות מוחי של חולדות ערות וקבועות ראש הוא הדרישה לשמור על החולדה נייחת ורגועה לאורך כל תהליכי ההכנה ורכישת הנתונים. תנועות קטנות מייצרות תוצרי תנועה לא מוצדקים, שיכולים להשפיע לרעה על ניתוח נתונים ופרשנויות.
פותח מודל חדש של דימות מוחי מחולדות ערות ומקובעות ראש באמצעות קלעים מותאמים אישית, שתלי ראש מודפסים בתלת ממד (3D), כובעי ראש ומסגרת ראש המציעה מספר יתרונות לניסויים קלים. שתל הראש התלת-ממדי קל ומכסה חלק קטן מהגולגולת הדרושה לטרנספיקציה. שתלי הראש והכובעים המודפסים בתלת-ממד מתוכננים באמצעות תוכנת תכנון בעזרת מחשב (CAD). הפרוטוקולים של גירוי שפם, איסוף נתונים, ניתוח נתונים ותוצאות מחולדות מורדמות תוארו בפירוט בעבודה קודמת 5,6,7.
